Structural characterization of boron-containing glassy and semi-crystalline Biosilicate® by multinuclear NMR

Adding boron to Biosilicate® changes its local structure and crystallization behavior. NMR shows how borate groups redistribute charge-compensating cations and increase silicate connectivity, while crystallization changes the boron environments in the residual glass. In this system, boron reduces resistance to crystallization but has only a modest effect on dissolution in TRIS buffer.
