Highly porous niobium-containing silica glasses applied to the microwave-assisted conversion of fructose into HMF

Niobium-modified porous silica glasses are tested as catalysts for converting fructose into hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The study relates niobium dispersion and surface acidity to catalytic performance under microwave heating. It also examines the accompanying formation of humins, an important competing outcome in this conversion.
